Only a few days in Laos

I walked around Luang Prabang. There’s not much to do here. The same goes for Laos in general. Laos is not as tourist friendly as Thailand. I read the busses are nightmares here. The people are poorer here, so they will cheat you an extra buck if they can. I have had it happen already in internet shops, guesthouses, and with a Tuk-Tuk.

My symptoms resurfaced from a week ago–lots of nasal stuff and headaches. How many pharmacists does it take to get a correct diagonsis? Three. I saw three pharmacists today. Oh man. What a hassle.

The first pharmacist offered me common cold medicine. The second offered me nasal decongestant and Tylenol. The third one said that the virus transformed into a sinus infection, and I would need to take antiobiotics for a week. I knew that’s what it was, since I’ve gotten sick like this in the past. I just needed someone to diagnose it and prescribe me what I needed. On the plus side, the antibiotics costed only $30, while they would have cost $150 in the US.

I don’t have a reason to be in Laos, other than it’s on my way to Vietnam. I handed my passport over to a travel agent to get a Vietnam visa. It would take two business days to process. I booked a plane ticket to Hanoi, Vietnam for Wednesday afternoon. I’ll hang around in Luang Prabang until then.

I’m excited about Vietnam. There’s lots of recent history to explore. And since it’s all on the Pacific coast, there will be great views, beaches, and towns to see. Vietnam is tourist friendly, like Thailand, so I’ll really enjoy myself.
